National Day and the Grand Prix Fall in the Same Week. Here Is What That Means for the Desert.
Abu Dhabi has two of its biggest dates back to back this year: the National Day holiday on 2 and 3 December, then the Formula 1 finale from 4 to 6 December. The city fills. The desert, an hour inland, does not fill in the same way — but the clock changes, and one day in particular is a trap.
- National Day holiday: Wed 2 – Thu 3 December
- Grand Prix weekend: Fri 4 – Sun 6 December
- Sunset 5:34 PM all week — the earliest of the year
Two fixed dates, five days, one city. The National Day holiday falls on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December. The Formula 1 season finishes at Yas Marina across Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December. Put them together and Abu Dhabi has a solid block from the Wednesday to the Sunday where hotels are full, the island is busy and the roads around Yas behave differently.
Most places will tell you to book early and leave it there. This is the version we would give a friend: which days are genuinely busy out at the camp, which day you should not try to combine with the race, and what the early sunset does to your pickup time.
One correction first, because it circulates every year. Commemoration Day on 1 December is not confirmed as a day off for 2026. Plan Tuesday the 1st as a working day unless your employer says otherwise.
What is actually happening, and when
The holiday is the fixed part. Eid Al Etihad is set by Cabinet resolution for 2 and 3 December, which in 2026 is a Wednesday and a Thursday. That is a two-day public holiday sitting in the middle of the working week.
The race weekend runs straight into it. Practice is on the Friday, qualifying on the Saturday, and the race itself is on Sunday 6 December. Abu Dhabi traditionally runs a late-afternoon start that finishes under floodlights — check the official session times closer to the date, because published listings have been inconsistent this year and we are not going to guess them for you.
For anyone taking leave, Friday 4 December is the single day that turns this into a five-day run from the Wednesday to the Sunday.
Our camp is nowhere near Yas Island
This matters more than anything else on the page. The race happens on Yas Island, on the coast. Our camp is at Al Khatim, inland, and the drive out leaves the city heading east. The route does not touch Yas Island at any point.
So the road closures, the park-and-ride queues and the post-race exodus that make the island slow are not on our road. If you are staying on Yas itself, your first ten minutes will be slower than usual on race days. After that you are on open highway. The full route to the camp is unchanged.
What we do adjust is the pickup buffer. On the Saturday and Sunday we start the hotel circuit earlier for guests staying on or near Yas, because getting off the island is the slow part, not the desert.
Sunday 6 December: pick the race or pick the evening safari
Here is the conflict nobody mentions. Our evening pickups run roughly 2:30 to 3:30 PM depending on where you are staying. The race starts in the late afternoon. Those two things occupy the same hours.
On Sunday 6 December you cannot do both. If you have a race ticket, the evening safari is not the trip for you that day. Two things that do work:
- The morning safari on race day. You are back in the city by lunchtime, in good time for the gates.
- The evening safari on any other day of the week — Wednesday through Saturday are all free of it.
We would rather tell you this five weeks out than have you book the wrong slot and discover it on the day.
Which days are actually busy at the camp
The camp is not the city. It fills on a different pattern, and we would rather set the expectation properly.
- Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December — the busiest two evenings of the week. This is the public holiday, and it is mostly residents and families. A full camp is a better camp in our view: the tanoura spins to a crowd and the fire pit has people around it. If you want quiet, these are not your nights.
- Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December — busy but not packed, and the mix changes to visitors who are here for the race and have the daytime free.
- Sunday 6 December — the quietest evening of the five, for the obvious reason that half the city is at a motor race. If you are in Abu Dhabi that week and do not have a ticket, this is the evening to take.
Nothing about the camp changes with the crowd. Same dinner, same shows, same dunes. Only the number of people around the fire.
Sunset is at its earliest of the whole year
Through this entire week the sun sets at 5:34 PM. Not approximately — it sits on 5:34 from the last days of November until about 8 December, then starts creeping later again. These are the earliest sunsets Abu Dhabi gets.
That has one practical consequence: pickups are at their earliest too. An evening safari that collects you at 3:00 PM in April collects you closer to 2:30 PM now, because the dune drive and the sunset stop have to happen before the light goes. If you are planning a day around it, block the afternoon from about 2:30 PM, not 4:00 PM.

December is the good month, and the nights are cold
December averages 26.5°C by day and 15.7°C at night in Abu Dhabi. The daytime figure is why this is peak season. The night figure is the one people forget.
Fifteen degrees in open desert, with a breeze and no buildings holding heat, feels colder than fifteen degrees in the city. Bring a proper jacket for the evening, and if you are doing the overnight safari bring something warmer than you think you need. The what to wear guide has the detail.
The other December feature is fog. It arrives overnight and burns off after sunrise, and our corridor is one the fog likes. It does not affect evening trips at all. For a morning or sunrise safari we build in extra time — the same thing we wrote about in September’s road and fog update, which still applies.
There is no holiday surcharge, and there will not be one
Our prices on 2 December are the prices on 2 January. No peak-week rate, no National Day premium, no race-weekend markup. We do not run discount codes either, so there is nothing to wait for.
| How you get there | Price | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive — you take your own car to the camp | AED 35 | per person |
| Sharing coach from Al Wahda, Mazyad or Safeer | AED 60 | per person |
| Sharing 4×4, collected from your door | AED 200 | per person |
| Sharing 4×4 with VIP majlis seating and a quad ride | AED 400 | per person |
| Private car, the whole vehicle up to seven | AED 699 | per car |
| Private Land Cruiser, evening | AED 999 | per car |
| Morning or sunrise, private Land Cruiser | AED 999 | per car |
Quad bikes are AED 100, the two-seat buggy is AED 800 for about thirty minutes, and a VIP majlis seat on a standard package is AED 50. Those are the only paid extras, and they are published before you book rather than offered at the camp. The full price and timings page has every package side by side, and why the same evening costs AED 35 or AED 999 explains what you are actually paying for.
Nothing is charged in advance. No deposit, no card details, free to cancel up to 24 hours before pickup — which is worth having in a week when plans move around.
What to book, depending on why you are here
You have a race ticket. Take the morning safari on the Sunday, or the evening safari on the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Do not try to pair the evening trip with race day.
You live here and you have the holiday off. The Wednesday and Thursday are the busy ones. If you want the dunes quiet, go on the Sunday while everyone else is at Yas.
You are flying in for the week. We pick up from the airport as well as from hotels — see safari pickup from the airport. If your trip is short, the stopover page sets out what fits around flight times.
You are bringing a group or a family. From four people the private car costs less per head than four separate seats, and you keep your own pickup time — which is the part that matters in a week this busy.
You want to make a day of it. The landmarks sit well alongside the desert; the city tour covers them, and Ferrari World is on Yas if you are already on the island.
National Day and race week, answered
Is there a surcharge for National Day or the Grand Prix weekend?
No. Our prices on 2 December are the same as any other day of the year: AED 35 self-drive, AED 60 on the sharing coach, AED 200 in a sharing 4×4 from your door, AED 699 for a private car and AED 999 for a private Land Cruiser. There is no peak-week rate and no discount code to wait for.
Can I do the evening safari on race day, Sunday 6 December?
Not comfortably. Our evening pickups run roughly 2:30 to 3:30 PM and the race starts in the late afternoon, so the two overlap. If you have a ticket, take the morning safari on the Sunday instead, or book the evening safari on another day of that week.
Do the Grand Prix road closures affect the drive to the camp?
No. The closures are around Yas Island on the coast and our camp is at Al Khatim, inland and east of the city. The route never touches Yas. If you are staying on the island itself we start your pickup a little earlier, because getting off Yas is the slow part.
Which evening is quietest that week?
Sunday 6 December, race day, because a large part of the city is at Yas Marina. The two busiest evenings are Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December, which are the public holiday.
What time does the sun set in early December?
5:34 PM, every day from the end of November until about 8 December. These are the earliest sunsets of the year in Abu Dhabi, so pickups are at their earliest too. Block the afternoon from about 2:30 PM.
Is 1 December a public holiday in 2026?
Commemoration Day on 1 December is not confirmed as a day off for 2026. The confirmed public holiday is National Day on 2 and 3 December. Plan the Tuesday as a working day unless your employer says otherwise.

Planning the rest of the month: what December is like in the desert, then Christmas and New Year, both of which book up earlier than this week does. If you are deciding at short notice, booking at the last minute explains how late is too late. And for the trip itself, the evening safari page covers the hour-by-hour, while the best time to go puts December in context against the rest of the year.
