Four things people wish they had known
The dune drive is optional. Plenty of people book, worry about it for a week, and only find out at the tyre stop that they could have asked for it gently or skipped it altogether. Both are free and neither changes anything else about the evening.
The evening has a long, slow middle. Roughly ninety minutes between arriving at the camp and dinner being served. People expecting constant activity find that odd; people who came to sit on a dune and watch the light go call it the best part. Knowing it in advance changes how you feel about it.
The cold catches more people out than the heat. Everyone packs for a hot country. In December and January the camp genuinely gets cold after dark, and children feel it before adults do. One layer solves it.
You are further out than you think. Forty-five minutes to an hour inland, with patchy signal once you are in the dunes and no cash machine anywhere. Bring AED 100 to 200 and tell someone your plan — the same thing you would do anywhere.
What to tell us before you book
None of these change the price. All of them change how the evening is set up, and all of them are much easier to arrange before the day than on it.
Anyone prone to motion sickness. The driver is briefed and takes the gentle line from the start rather than adjusting halfway through.
Pregnancy, a heart condition, a back or neck problem, or recent surgery. The dune drive is out for all four. The rest of the evening is unaffected and we route straight to camp.
The ages of any children. Under three means no dune drive. It also tells us what to expect at the camp and whether a car seat matters for your pickup.
Dietary needs. Vegetarian is standard and needs no notice. Vegan, Jain and gluten-free do — give us a day and it is prepared properly rather than improvised.
Mobility. The camp is flat but it is sand, which is harder work than it looks. Tell us and we will be straight with you about what will and will not work.
An occasion. A birthday, an anniversary, a proposal. Say so and we will make it feel like one.
Questions before booking
Do I need to book a desert safari in advance?
Not far in advance, no — tomorrow evening is usually possible. Weekends in the peak season from November to February fill up, so a few days ahead is sensible then. There is no deposit either way, so booking early costs you nothing.
What is included in a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?
Dune bashing, a short camel ride, sandboarding, Arabic coffee and dates, unlimited soft drinks and water, henna, costume photos, the live shows, the BBQ buffet and stargazing — on every standard package, from AED 35 per person. Quad bikes, the buggy and VIP seating are add-ons.
How long does a desert safari take?
About six hours door to door for an evening trip, including forty-five minutes to an hour of driving each way. Pickups are mid to late afternoon and most guests are home by around half past nine.
Can I cancel if my plans change?
Yes, free of charge up to twelve hours before pickup. Nothing has been taken from you, so there is nothing to refund — just message the same WhatsApp thread.
What is the one thing most people forget to bring?
A layer for the evening, in every month of the year. The second is cash — AED 100 to 200 covers a tip and anything you decide to add, and there is no cash machine at the camp.
