Everything you need to know beforehand
The practical things guests ask on the day — answered here so you are not hunting through the FAQ.
What to wear and bring
Light, loose clothes and closed shoes — sandals fill with sand in minutes. From October to March bring a jacket; the desert cools fast once the sun drops. Sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera.
Safety and suitability
Dune bashing from age three, quad bikes and buggies from twelve, camel rides from about four. Pregnant guests and anyone with heart, back or neck trouble should sit the dune drive out — everything else is open to them.
Free cancellation
Cancel or move your date free up to 24 hours before pickup. There is no deposit and no card on file, so changing your mind costs nothing. If weather forces us to cancel, you pick a new date or take a full refund.
Food and dietary needs
The whole BBQ buffet is halal, cooked in a halal kitchen, with a full vegetarian spread beside it. Tell us about allergies or anything you avoid when you book and the camp sets it aside for you.
Getting around the camp
The camp sits on firm, level ground and the cars park right beside it. Dune bashing is not suitable for wheelchair users, but the dinner, the shows and the camp itself are. Message us first and we will arrange a private car.
How long it takes
The evening safari runs about six hours door to door, the morning around five, sunrise about four. Every tour and its exact pickup window is in the table below.

Bus pickup points: Al Wahda Mall · Mazyad Mall · Safeer Mall, Shabiya. 4×4 and private packages: any hotel, residence or mall in Abu Dhabi city. The camp: Al Khatim desert, about 85 km from the city — roughly an hour’s drive if you’re coming in your own car.
Why people book the Abu Dhabi desert instead
Both are real deserts. They are not the same afternoon.
- About an hour from the city, and genuinely quiet once you’re there
- Long unbroken dune ridges — few other vehicles in sight
- A Bedouin camp, not a tourist complex running shifts
- From AED 40, booked direct, paid on arrival
- Camel ride, sandboarding, henna and three live shows included
- Convoys of 4×4s working the same handful of dunes
- Large camps running several sittings a night
- Fixed schedule — you move when the group moves
- Typically AED 150–350 once booking fees are added
- Extras often quoted at the camp, not before you book
If you’re staying in Dubai with one free evening, the Dubai desert is the practical choice. If you’re in Abu Dhabi — or you simply want the quieter version — this is it.
Al Khatim — the quiet side of the Arabian desert
Most desert safaris in the UAE run into the same few dune belts outside Dubai, where dozens of vehicles queue for the same ridge. Al Khatim is different. It sits east of Abu Dhabi city, about an hour’s drive out, and on most evenings you’ll share the dunes with almost nobody.
The sand here runs deep apricot and gold, the ridges are long and unbroken, and the camp sits in a natural bowl between them — which is why the shows carry so well and the stars come out so clearly once the lanterns dim.

The dunes are an hour away

Desert safari Abu Dhabi — FAQ
Twenty-six things guests actually ask us on WhatsApp, answered in full.
Prices, booking and payment
9 questionsHow much does a desert safari in Abu Dhabi cost?
The entry price is AED 40 per person if you drive yourself to the meeting point. Add a shared coach and it’s AED 60; a Land Cruiser to your door is AED 150; a private vehicle for up to six people is AED 700 for the whole car. Named packages sit above that — Evening and Morning at AED 250, the Bedouin overnight at AED 450. Nothing is payable until you arrive.
How do I book, and do I pay online?
There’s no online payment at all. Message us on WhatsApp, tell us the package, date and how many of you there are, and we’ll confirm your pickup in the same chat. You pay at the camp — cash or card. No deposit, no booking fee.
What payment methods do you take?
Cash in dirhams or most debit and credit cards, paid at the camp. No online payment, no deposit, no booking fee, and no surcharge for paying by card.
Do children go free? Are there group rates?
Under-fives come free sharing an adult’s seat. From five, everyone pays the standard per-person rate — we don’t run a separate child price. For ten or more, message us and we’ll quote a group rate; for a family, the private car often works out cheapest anyway.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your pickup. Since there’s no deposit and nothing paid online, changing your mind costs you nothing. Rescheduling is free too, subject to space. If we ever cancel for weather, you choose a new date or get a full refund.
How far ahead should I book?
A day or two is usually plenty, and same-day often works — just message us. Weekends and public holidays go faster, so two or three days ahead is safer if your date is fixed. There’s no deposit, so booking early costs nothing.
What do I get in the standard package?
The same seventeen things on every standard tier: dune bashing in a Land Cruiser, a short camel ride, sandboarding, Arabic coffee, tea and dates on arrival, unlimited soft drinks and water, Bedouin tent seating, henna for ladies, Arabic costume photos, the sheesha corner, hot starters, belly dance, LED Tanoura and fire shows, the BBQ buffet with veg and non-veg, separate washrooms, and stargazing once the lanterns dim.
Do you run private and VIP safaris?
We do. Private car for up to six, private morning and sunrise trips, a luxury Land Cruiser evening, and VIP majlis seating on any package. Send us your group size and date on WhatsApp and we’ll put a private package together.
Can I add quad biking or other activities?
Yes, to any package. Quad bike, dune buggy, a longer camel ride, extra dune bashing — every price is listed in the add-ons table on this page, and it’s the same price whether you book it now or decide at the camp.

Timings and how the day runs
9 questionsWhat time does the evening safari start and finish?
Pickup is between 2:30 and 3:30 PM depending where you are, and you’ll be back between 9:00 and 9:30 PM — about six hours including the drive, the dunes, the camp, dinner and the shows.
What time do the shared pickups leave?
The mall coaches pull out around 2:30–3:00 PM. Hotel and 4×4 pickups run 2:30–3:30 PM across the city. Self-drive guests get GPS coordinates and choose their own departure — you just need to reach the meeting point before the convoy heads in.
What’s the difference between the morning and evening safari?
The evening is the full experience: sunset dune bashing, BBQ dinner and live shows in the camp. The morning is cooler and quieter — dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride, back in the city before noon, with no dinner or shows. Photographers and families with small children usually prefer the morning.
How long does the dune bashing last?
Around 30 to 45 minutes across the ridges in a Land Cruiser with a trained driver. If anyone in the car wants it calmer, say so — we can ease off or drive straight to camp instead.
Where are the pickup points?
Shared coaches leave from Al Wahda Mall, Mazyad Mall and Safeer Mall in Shabiya. If you’re on a 4×4 or private package we collect you from any hotel, apartment or mall in Abu Dhabi city. Self-drive guests get a location pin on WhatsApp.
Where does the safari actually take place?
In the Al Khatim desert, east of Abu Dhabi city, roughly 85 km out and about an hour on the road. It’s a long way from the convoys you see on the Dubai circuit — most evenings there’ll be barely another vehicle on the ridge with you.
Can I really drive myself?
Yes — that’s the AED 40 option, and it’s the cheapest desert safari in Abu Dhabi. We send exact coordinates for a tarmac meeting point, so any normal car gets there; no off-road driving needed. From there you join the convoy and get the full camp evening like everyone else.
When is the best time of year to go?
October through April is the sweet spot, with daytime temperatures around 22–30°C and genuinely cold evenings in December and January. We run year-round; through summer the timings simply shift earlier and later so you’re never out in the worst of the heat.
Do safaris run in summer?
Every day of the year. In the hotter months we move the timings — earlier mornings, later evenings — so the dune drive, camel rides and dinner all happen in comfortable air. The camp has shaded seating and unlimited water throughout.

Comfort, safety and who can come
8 questionsIs dune bashing safe for children and older guests?
Families join us every day. The drivers are experienced and the vehicles are maintained for it — and the intensity is entirely up to you. Say the word and your driver will take it gently or skip the dunes altogether and head to camp. We’d ask pregnant guests and anyone with heart or back trouble to sit the dune drive out; from age three upwards, children are fine.
Are there age or health restrictions?
Dune bashing from age three. Quad bikes and buggies from twelve. Camel rides from about four. Pregnant guests and anyone with heart, back or neck problems should skip the dune drive — the camp itself is flat, easy to move around, and everything else is open to you.
Is the camp wheelchair accessible?
The camp sits on firm, level ground and the vehicles park right beside it, so getting in and around is manageable. Dune bashing isn’t suitable, but the dinner, the shows and the camp itself are. Message us beforehand and we’ll arrange a private car and make sure the team is expecting you.
Is the food halal?
Yes, the entire BBQ buffet is halal and prepared in a halal kitchen, with a full vegetarian spread alongside. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you book and we’ll sort it out.
What should I wear and bring?
Light, loose clothing and closed shoes — sandals fill with sand within minutes. Between October and March bring a jacket, because the desert cools down fast after sunset. Sunglasses and a camera are worth having; water and dinner are already covered.
Do safaris run during Ramadan?
Yes, every day. The camp runs as normal — dune bashing, camel rides, sandboarding and the BBQ dinner all go ahead. The live entertainment pauses out of respect during Ramadan and on religious holidays.
Abu Dhabi or Dubai — which desert safari is better?
If you’re staying in Dubai with one free evening, take the Dubai one; it’s practical. If you’re in Abu Dhabi, or you’d simply rather not share the dunes with thirty other 4×4s, Al Khatim is the quieter, more genuine version — and it starts at AED 40 booked direct.
Is an Abu Dhabi desert safari worth doing?
It’s the one thing most visitors remember from the trip. In a single evening you get dune bashing, a camel ride, sandboarding, a BBQ dinner and three live shows in a Bedouin camp — from AED 40. Compared with almost anything else on an Abu Dhabi itinerary, it’s very good value.

Message us and we’ll sort the rest
Tell us the package, your date and how many of you there are. A real person replies — usually within a few minutes, whatever the hour where you are. No deposit, no card details, nothing to pay until you reach the camp.
We’re a service-area operator — the desert camp is our base, so there’s no walk-in office. Everything is arranged on WhatsApp and settled at the camp.
