The Etihad Stopover: Free Hotel Nights in Abu Dhabi, Read Carefully
Etihad’s programme offers a complimentary hotel stay of up to two nights mid-journey — genuinely free, with rules that disqualify people who skim. Here they are unskimmed, plus how a desert evening fits into the free nights.

One thing before the details: this is Etihad’s programme, not ours. We do not sell it, book it or profit from it — we are the desert safari your free nights make room for. Everything below is drawn from Etihad’s own published page, quoted where it matters, and where the internet repeats a figure Etihad does not publish, we say so instead of repeating it.
What the offer actually is
Break a long Etihad journey in Abu Dhabi and the airline provides “a complimentary two-night stay” — its own words — at partner hotels in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain. (An Etihad news release elsewhere says “one or two nights”, so treat it as up to two and let your booking confirm the exact allowance.) Check-in and check-out are flexible around flight times, and if Etihad changes or cancels your flight, the hotel is rebooked free or refunded.
There is also a Stopover Pass — a separate registration offering “up to 15%” off major attractions and tours. A discount, note, not free entry; more than one blog inflates it.
The four rules that disqualify people

That last row is where we differ from every page ranking for this topic: we will not publish a number Etihad does not currently publish. Call them; it is their programme.
What it does not include
Transfers are not stated as included on Etihad’s live page for Abu Dhabi stays — plan the taxi (roughly AED 70–100 to the island) or an arranged pickup. Meals beyond what the hotel includes, attraction tickets and tours are yours. The free element is the room; everything around it is a normal, self-funded — and cheap to solve — city stay.
Fare-class and award-ticket eligibility are also unpublished; the same three-day phone call settles those.
Fitting the desert into the free nights
Here is why the programme and the desert suit each other: with a hotel, you stop being a layover guest and become a normal visitor — no boarding-time anxiety, no per-car-only arithmetic. Is the Etihad stopover hotel really free?
Yes — Etihad’s own page offers “a complimentary two-night stay” at partner hotels in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain when you break an eligible journey there. The room is the free part; transfers, meals beyond the hotel’s, tickets and tours are your own.
Why was I told my booking does not qualify?
Most often because of one line in Etihad’s terms: “flights booked through a travel agent are not eligible.” Bookings made anywhere other than directly with Etihad are the single most common disqualifier. The stay must also be arranged with Etihad at least three days before flying.
What is the minimum stopover length for the free hotel?
Etihad’s live page does not publish one. The “24 hours” repeated across the internet traces to an old terms PDF, so we do not repeat it as fact — confirm your specific itinerary with Etihad when you call to arrange the stay.
Does the free stopover include my UAE visa?
No. Etihad’s own wording: make sure you have a pre-arranged UAE visa or are eligible for visa on arrival. The hotel offer creates no entry rights. Dozens of nationalities get visa on arrival anyway; the transit visa page covers everyone else.
Can we do a desert safari during an Etihad stopover?
