The honest arithmetic
Of a nine-hour day, how much is actually Dubai?
The single biggest complaint about this trip anywhere is people realising afterwards that half of it was spent in a vehicle. Here is the maths before you book instead of after.

The fountain problem
The Dubai Fountain runs every half hour from around 18:00 until late. A standard day trip that heads home at 17:00 misses it entirely, and nobody warns you. Tell us you want the fountain and we build the day around it — it means a later return to Abu Dhabi, and it is worth it.

Two ways to do the day
The shared tour is per person. The private tour is one price for the whole vehicle, up to six people — which for a family of four or more is usually the cheaper of the two as well as the better one.

Four people and private wins
Four people shared is AED 1,200. Private is AED 950 for the same four, plus you skip the pickup loop and set your own timing. At three people shared is still cheaper at AED 900, and we will tell you that rather than push the bigger number.
Entry tickets and lunch
Every attraction price is in the table further down this page. Burj Khalifa from AED 189, Museum of the Future from AED 169, Dubai Frame around AED 50. The souks, the abra, the Marina and the fountain cost nothing.

Two things to know
The old Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort has been closed since 2020, and it is still printed on plenty of tour itineraries. If you see it listed anywhere, that operator has not updated their page in five years. Al Shindagha Museum nearby is the working alternative.
And Burj Khalifa entry is where people feel misled. Tour photos show the tower; the fine print says photo stop. If you want to go up, say so when you book — it needs a timed ticket days in advance and it changes the shape of the day.
The route
What a good day in Dubai actually looks like
- ~07:30Collected in Abu DhabiEarlier if you are on Saadiyat or the Corniche. On a private car it is simply the time you asked for.
- ~09:30Old Dubai firstThe gold souk and the spice souk while it is still cool and before the crowds. Then the abra across the creek for one dirham — a wooden boat, an outboard motor, and the best view of the old city there is.
- ~11:30Jumeirah and the Burj Al ArabThe mosque, the beach road, and the viewpoint everybody photographs the sail-shaped hotel from.
- ~12:30Palm Jumeirah and AtlantisDriving the trunk of the Palm out to Atlantis and back. It is a drive and a photo stop — nobody gets inside Atlantis on a day trip.
- ~13:30Lunch and Dubai MarinaThe Marina walk, the skyline, and somewhere to eat that is not a food court unless you want one.

Before you book
Who this trip is not for
We would rather lose the booking than have you spend nine hours regretting it.
Families with toddlers
Three hours of driving and a full day of walking. It is a lot. The morning desert safari is a far better day out with small children.
If Burj Khalifa at sunset is the point
Sunset slots are the most expensive and hardest to get, and holding a whole tour group to one is awkward. If that is your priority, take a private car or go up on a separate trip.
If you want to shop properly
Dubai Mall alone can eat five hours. A day trip gives you ninety minutes there. Go and stay a night instead — we will say so rather than sell you a rushed version.
One free day, first time in the UAE
You want to see the famous things, understand how the city fits together, and be back in Abu Dhabi for bed. That is exactly what this is, and it does it well.
If you are thinking of driving yourself
Perfectly doable — the E11 is a straight fast road. Two things nobody mentions: Dubai has Salik toll gates at roughly AED 4 to 6 each and you will pass several, and rental companies bill them back later with an admin fee on top. Abu Dhabi has its own Darb gates on peak-hour entry. Budget for it rather than being surprised by a charge three weeks after you fly home.

How far is Dubai from Abu Dhabi?
Around 145 km up the E11, which is one hour twenty to one hour forty-five in clear traffic and over two hours at peak. There is no border and no checkpoint — it is the same country and you will not notice crossing.
Do I need my passport?
No. Bring photo ID as you would anywhere, but there is no border control between the emirates.
How many hours do I actually get in Dubai?
Four and a half to five and a half on a standard day trip. The rest of the eight or nine hours is the pickup loop and the drive both ways. We would rather you knew that now.
Is Burj Khalifa entry included?
No, and this is the commonest complaint about these tours anywhere. Standard day trips give you a photo stop from the base. At The Top starts around AED 189, needs a timed ticket booked days ahead, and changes the shape of the day. Tell us if you want it.
Can I see the Dubai Fountain?
Only if you stay late. Shows run every half hour from around 18:00. A tour that leaves Dubai at 17:00 misses it completely. Say you want it and we build the day around it, with a later return.
Is the Dubai Museum on the itinerary?
No, because it has been closed since 2020. If you see it on anyone else’s itinerary, that page has not been updated in five years. Al Shindagha Museum nearby is the working alternative.
Is the Museum of the Future included?
No. It needs a pre-booked, non-refundable, timed ticket from around AED 169 and slots sell out. It also does not fit a day trip alongside everything else. Check it is open for your dates before planning around it.
Is lunch included?
No. We stop somewhere sensible and you choose. Telling you a meal is included and then taking you to a food court is not something we want to do.
Is Dubai Frame worth it?
It is about AED 50 and takes forty-five minutes. Opinions are genuinely split. On a day trip it means dropping something else, so we would usually say no.
What should I wear?
Normal summer clothing is fine in the malls and Marina. For the souks and Old Dubai, shoulders and knees covered is respectful and more comfortable in the heat anyway.
Can I do this as a private tour?
Yes — AED 950 for the vehicle, up to six people. It removes the pickup loop entirely, and you can stay for the fountain without asking anyone. At four people or more it also works out cheaper than the shared tour.
Should I just stay a night in Dubai instead?
If you want to shop properly or go up the Burj Khalifa at sunset, honestly yes. If you want to see the famous things in a day and sleep in Abu Dhabi, the day trip does that well.
What if I drive myself?
Easy drive, but budget for Salik toll gates in Dubai at roughly AED 4 to 6 each. Rental companies bill them back later with an admin fee.
Can I combine Dubai with a desert safari?
Not on the same day — both are full days. Plenty of guests do Dubai one day and the desert the next, and we will price both together.
Do I pay in advance?
No. Nothing is charged on this website. You pay on the day.
One day, done properly
