German visitors ask better questions than most, and they are nearly always the same three: what is actually included, what will be added later, and is any of this real.
So this page answers them without decoration. The full list, the two genuine extras, what the timings mean in practice, and where the authenticity ends — because pretending a fire show is Bedouin tradition would insult everyone involved.
The complete list, in every package
The same eighteen things are in every standard package, from the AED 35 self-drive to the AED 599 private car. What you pay more for is transport and comfort — never a better evening at the camp.

VAT is included in the quoted price. No service charge is added at the camp. The henna and the costume photographs are genuinely free, not a hook.
The only two things that cost more
There is no upsell circuit at this camp — nobody walks the carpets selling photographs you did not ask for. Two things are priced separately and both are optional:
Quad bikes and buggies. Motorized desert riding is a separate activity with its own equipment, helmets and minimum ages. Prices are on prices and timings and you agree them before you book, not at the camp.
The VIP majlis seat, AED 50 per person. A front bay with seating that has a back to it, rather than the shared carpets. Worth it for older knees and for anyone who wants the front row at the show. Everything else about the evening is identical.
That is the entire list. If anyone at a camp in the Emirates asks you for money for something not on it, you are being sold something — the scams page covers what to watch for.
What the times mean in practice
Pickup is a window, not a minute. Shared transfers collect several hotels in sequence, so we give you a window — typically thirty minutes wide — and the driver messages when he is close. If you want a fixed departure time to the minute, take the private car: your vehicle, your clock.
The camp programme does run to time. Sunset stop on the dunes, arrival at camp, buffet opening, then the shows in sequence, then departure. It is the same shape every evening because the sun is not negotiable.
Door to door is about six hours for the evening safari — late-afternoon collection, back at your hotel around half past nine. The morning safari is shorter. The overnight runs to breakfast. All of it, with the actual clock times, is on prices and timings.
Our camp is at Al Khatim: about an hour from the Corniche, forty minutes from Zayed International.
Where the real ends and the show begins
A fair question deserves a straight answer, so here it is in two halves.
Real: the desert. Al Khatim is open dune country an hour outside the city, not a landscaped enclosure behind a hotel. The camels are camels. The sand in your shoes is real sand. The food is cooked on site, with the grill running in front of you and the coffee poured from a dallah the way it is poured in any Emirati home.
Performance: the shows. The tanoura dancer, the fire act and the belly dance are entertainment programmed for guests, and anyone telling you they are ancient Bedouin custom is selling you a story. They are good, people enjoy them, and they are what they are.
Not ours: the camp itself belongs to a supplier we work with, alongside other operators. We say that plainly rather than implying we built it. What we control is your booking, your vehicle, your driver and your price — and those are where an honest operator actually differs from a dishonest one.
Payment, cancellation and driving yourself
Nothing is paid in advance. No deposit, no card details, no payment link, no online checkout. You agree one total on WhatsApp and pay at the camp in cash or by card. If that sounds unusually relaxed, it is deliberate — it is also why we do not need your card number in a message.
Free cancellation up to twelve hours before pickup. After that we have committed a vehicle and a driver to you.
Driving yourself is straightforward. AED 35 per person, we send a pin and an arrival window, and the route is highway plus a short graded track. No four-wheel drive is needed to reach the camp and no off-road driving is allowed — the dune bashing is done by the camp’s drivers, in their vehicles. See self-drive.
Bring a jacket between November and February. The nights in open desert are considerably colder than the day suggests, and closed shoes save a lot of irritation.

Are there hidden costs at the camp?
No. VAT is inside the quoted price, no service charge is added, and there is no upsell circuit at the camp. The henna and the costume photos are free. Tips are voluntary and nobody hints.
Do the timings actually hold?
Pickup runs to a window rather than a minute, because several hotels are collected in sequence – we tell you the window when you book. The camp programme itself runs to time: sunset stop, camp arrival, buffet, shows, departure. Door to door it is about six hours.
Is the camp authentic or staged for tourists?
It is a working desert camp built in Bedouin style, not a museum and not a film set. The dunes are real open desert an hour from the city. The shows are performances, and we would not pretend otherwise – the tanoura and fire acts are entertainment. The food, the camels and the sand are not.
Can I drive to the camp with a rental car?
Yes, and it is the cheapest option at AED 35 per person. We send a location pin and an arrival window. The route is sealed highway followed by a short graded approach that a normal rental car manages – no off-road driving is required or permitted.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
No. No deposit, no card details, no payment link. You agree one total on WhatsApp and pay at the camp, cash or card. Cancellation is free up to twelve hours before pickup.
