Desert Safari in April: The Worst Midday and the Best Evening

35.0°C in the afternoon and 21.1°C after dark — the sharpest step on the calendar, and the last nights under 22°C until November. April is the month the advice becomes: book the evening, and only the evening.

April is where the Abu Dhabi year splits in two. The afternoon crosses from warm into genuinely hot — a five-degree jump from March, the biggest single step of the twelve months — while the evening quietly becomes the best it will be all year.

That contradiction is the whole month. Judged by a midday figure, April looks like the beginning of the end. Judged by what happens after five o’clock, it is one of the two or three finest months to be out on the sand.

Start here

The short version

The afternoon is over. 35.0°C on average. March was 29.7. Nothing about the middle of an April day is comfortable outdoors, and no part of our trip happens then.

The evening is close to perfect. 21.1°C at the camp — the last nights under 22°C until November. Warm enough for one thin layer, cool enough to sit out for hours.

The light runs long. Sunset 6:39 to 6:51 PM. After a three o’clock pickup that is the longest golden hour of the year so far, and dinner in full darkness.

The sea has caught up. About 25.2°C, the first genuinely swimmable water since autumn. April is the one month where a beach morning and a desert evening both work properly.

The rain stops here. 5.2 mm across roughly one day, and then effectively nothing until November.

Look at the first row across the three months. March to April is 5.3 degrees; April to May is 4.6. Nowhere else on the calendar do two consecutive steps move that far, which is why spring here feels less like a season than a door closing.

Now look at the second row. 21.1°C is the last night under 22 until November — seven months away. Everything good about an April evening comes from that number.

The angle

A month with two completely different halves to its day

Most months here can be summarised in one sentence. April cannot, and the reason people get it wrong is that they judge it by a single number.

If you look up “Abu Dhabi in April” you will find 35°C and conclude the desert is off the table. But 35°C is the average daily maximum, and it happens at about two in the afternoon. Our pickup is at three. The hottest hour of your day is spent behind air-conditioned glass on the E22, and by the time you are standing on sand the temperature is already falling.

By sunset, somewhere between 6:39 and 6:51 PM, the air is pleasant. By the time dinner is served it is heading for 21°C. There is no other month where the gap between what the forecast says and what you actually experience is this wide.

The flip side is that April punishes anyone who ignores it. Standing on an unshaded dune at midday in April is a genuinely bad idea, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a daytime trip.

Planning

The one month where the sea and the sand both work

Visitors often want to swim and do a desert safari on the same trip, and for most of the year the calendar refuses to cooperate.

In February the air is perfect and the sea is at its coldest of the year, around 21.1°C. In August the sea is bath-warm and the afternoon is 43°C. April is the crossing point: water at about 25.2°C, which is a real swim rather than an endurance test, and an evening that still drops to 21°C.

The practical shape of an April day: beach or pool in the morning, indoors and out of the sun through the middle of the day, pickup at three, dunes by half past four. It is the most complete single day the Abu Dhabi calendar offers.

Timing

Early April and late April are not the same month

The first week still behaves like March. Afternoons in the low thirties, evenings that need a light layer, and the tail of the winter season still in the camps.

The last week is already reaching into May. Afternoons pushing toward 38°C, nights that no longer cool below the mid-twenties, and noticeably more room at the camp as the season empties out.

If you have flexibility and comfort matters most, take the first half. If you want the latest light and the quietest camp, take the last. Both are good months; they are just not the same one.

Clothing

What to wear in April

ItemWhy
Light, loose clothes35°C at pickup — cotton or linen, not synthetics
One thin long sleeve21.1°C at the camp is mild, not cold
Long trousersStill better on a camel and a quad
Closed shoes and socksSand gets into everything else
Sunglasses, hat, sunscreenApril sun is strong at pickup time, unlike winter
Water you carry yourselfDrinks are unlimited at the camp, but the drive matters too

No jacket, no fleece. April is the first month since October where you can leave both behind and not regret it. There is more on the what to wear guide.

Unlimited water and soft drinks are included, and from April onwards that stops being a footnote.
Weather

Where the rain stops for the year

April averages 5.2 mm across roughly one day. It is the closing edge of the small winter rain window that runs from November to April.

From May onwards the numbers fall away to almost nothing — 0.3 mm in May, zero in June, 0.7 mm in July. If rain certainty matters for your plans, April is the last month with any meaningful chance of it and the first with almost none.

Whatever green the winter rain brought up between the dunes will be going or gone by mid-April. If you want to see the desert with anything living in it, March is your month.

Which trip

Morning or evening in April?

The evening, and it is not close. This is the month the evening safari is at its best: long golden light, a full dark camp, and a temperature that settles rather than plunges. From AED 35 a person if you drive out yourself.

The private morning drive at AED 799 per car still works well in April — a dawn start means you are on the sand before the heat arrives, and the light is excellent. It is a genuine option here in a way it stops being by June, when the morning is only sensible if you start at first light and finish early.

Honest advice

Who April suits, and who should pick another month

Book April if you want the best evening safari of the year; if you want to swim and see the desert on the same trip; if you want a long golden hour and a fully dark camp; if you dislike being cold and found the winter evenings sharp; or if you want the winter quality with the summer quiet starting to arrive.

Pick another month if you want to spend the day outdoors as well as the evening, in which case March is your last chance; if you are travelling with anyone who struggles in real heat during the day; if you want green in the desert, which is a March thing; or if you want the very latest sunsets and the emptiest camps, which is June.

Questions

April questions we get on WhatsApp

Is April a good month for a desert safari in Abu Dhabi?

For an evening safari, outstandingly. For anything at midday, no. April averages 35.0°C by day and 21.1°C at night. Pickup is at three in the afternoon, so the hottest hour is spent inside an air-conditioned vehicle, and from about five o’clock the month is close to perfect.

How hot is Abu Dhabi in April?

The average daytime high is 35.0°C and the average overnight low is 21.1°C. That daytime figure is more than five degrees up on March, which is the sharpest single step on the whole calendar. The nights, at 21.1°C, are the last ones under 22°C until November.

What time is sunset in April?

From about 6:39 PM on the 1st to about 6:51 PM on the 30th. Golden hour runs long and dinner happens in full darkness, which is the ideal shape for the evening programme.

Can I swim and do a desert safari on the same day in April?

This is the month for it. The sea reaches about 25.2°C in April — warm enough for a real swim, unlike February’s 21.1°C — and the safari does not start until three. A beach morning and a desert evening genuinely work together in April in a way they do not in any winter month.

Does it rain in April?

Barely. About 5.2 mm across roughly one day in the whole month. April is where the small winter rain window closes; from May to October rainfall is effectively zero.

What should I wear on an April safari?

Light clothes for a 35°C afternoon and one thin layer for the evening. At 21.1°C you will want a long sleeve rather than a jacket. Closed shoes and long trousers still make sense on a camel or a quad, and sun protection matters more in April than in any winter month.

Is April busy?

Moderately, and it thins as the month goes on. The winter season is winding down and the summer quiet has not started. Two to three days ahead is usually enough, more for a weekend or a private car.

Is April too hot for children?

Not for the evening safari. By the time you reach the dunes the temperature is falling, and the camp at 21.1°C is comfortable for any age. What is not suitable in April is unshaded outdoor time in the middle of the day, which is true anywhere in the Gulf from now until October.

Should I book April or May?

April, if you can. They share the same evening structure but April’s afternoons average 35.0°C against May’s 39.6°C, and April’s nights are three and a half degrees cooler. May buys you a later sunset and an emptier camp; April buys you a more comfortable day around it.

The month either side

The March guide covers the last month that works all day, and May — the quietest of the shoulder months — is next. Every package and pickup time is on the price and timings page. All twelve months are compared on the best time to go page.
