Desert Safari in June: The Longest Days and the Latest Sunset
Thirteen and a half hours of daylight, a sun still up at 7:15 PM, zero rainfall and the emptiest camps of the year. June asks one thing of you: go in the evening, and know what a late sunset does to the night.

June holds three records at once: the longest days of the year, the latest sunsets, and the only flat zero in the rainfall column. It also holds an unofficial one — the fewest people at the camp.
The trade is a 41.4°C afternoon, which is why the whole month is an evening proposition. But the thing that actually catches visitors out in June is not the heat. It is the clock.
The short version
The sun sets at a quarter past seven. 7:07 PM on the 1st, 7:15 by the 30th — the latest of the year. Everything in the evening shifts later with it.
The days are the longest. About thirteen and a half hours of daylight. Full darkness at the camp does not arrive until well after eight.
The afternoon is 41.4°C. Evening only. The hottest hour of your day happens inside an air-conditioned vehicle on the way out.
There is no rain at all. Zero, on average, for the entire month. It is the only month on the calendar that manages that.
Nobody is here. The quietest camps of the year. Same-day booking is usually fine, weekends included.

The sunset row does something here it does nowhere else. June ends at 7:15 PM and July opens at 7:15 — the turning point of the whole year. From the solstice onwards the evenings start shortening again, though it takes weeks before anyone notices.
The night row is the one that separates June from July. 26.9°C against 29.7°C is nearly three degrees, and after dark in open desert that is the difference between warm and heavy.
What a 7:15 PM sunset does to your evening
Everything about a desert safari is anchored to the sun, not the clock. Pickup stays at 3:00 to 3:30 PM all year, but what happens after that shifts by more than ninety minutes between December and June.
In December you reach the dunes with an hour of daylight, the sun is gone by 5:40 PM, and the entire camp programme runs in the dark. In June the sun is still well up when you arrive, the dune drive happens in bright late light, and sunset does not come until after seven. Dinner follows it. The stars arrive last, some time after eight thirty.
For families this is the thing to know before booking June. A six-year-old who would see a full starfield with dinner still on the plate in January will be asleep in the car before the sky goes properly black in June. If the stars are the reason you are bringing children, come between October and March.
For everyone else, the late sunset is a gift. The golden hour is the longest of the year, the dunes hold light far into the evening, and there is no rush at any point.
The emptiest month we run
June is low season by every measure. Winter visitors are long gone, residents are leaving for the summer, and the school holidays have not started properly.
What that means in practice is a version of the trip most people never see. The sunset ridge is yours. There is no queue for the camel or the quad. The dune session runs longer because there are fewer vehicles to coordinate. And you can book it the same afternoon.
Our prices do not drop in June, because they do not move at all. What June gives you instead of a discount is space, which is arguably worth more.
How the heat is actually handled
41.4°C sounds worse than a June evening feels, because none of the trip happens at 41.4°C.

The genuine advice for June is about water rather than temperature. Drink more than you think you need, starting before pickup rather than at the camp. Unlimited water, soft drinks and tea are included all evening, but the drive out is where people get behind.
What we will not do is sell you a midday activity in June. If someone offers you one, that tells you something about them.

Evening or dawn in June?
Both work in June, and nothing in between does.
The evening is the full programme — dune drive, sunset, camel, sandboarding, BBQ buffet and three live shows — from AED 35 a person self-drive. It runs later than in any other month because the sun does.
The private dawn drive at AED 799 per car is genuinely good in June, provided you treat it as a dawn trip rather than a morning one. Out at first light, on cool sand, finished before the heat builds. It is the only hour of a June day when the desert is comfortable in daylight.

Who June suits, and who should pick another month
Book June if you want the desert without other people in it; if you are booking last minute; if you want the longest golden hour of the year; if you want zero weather risk; or if you are a resident who wants a familiar evening with room to breathe.
Pick another month if you are bringing young children who you want to see the stars — that is October to March; if anyone in the group struggles with heat even briefly; if you want to spend any part of the day outdoors; or if you want sharp long-distance photographs, since the summer haze has started.

Does it rain in June?
No. June averages zero rainfall. It is the only month on the Abu Dhabi calendar with a flat zero, so there is no weather risk to plan around at all.
Is June too hot for a desert safari?
Not for the evening, if you go in expecting genuine heat at pickup. By the time you are on the dunes the sun is low and the temperature is falling. What is not sensible in June is any unshaded outdoor activity between about ten in the morning and four in the afternoon.
Is the desert cooler than the city in June?
It is drier, which matters more. Al Khatim sits about 85 km inland, away from the sea that supplies the humidity, so the evening air out there is noticeably less heavy than on the Corniche even when the temperature reading is similar.
How busy is June?
It is the quietest month we run. Same-day bookings are almost always possible, the dunes are empty and the camp has room. If crowds have put you off a desert safari before, June is the answer.
Should I book June or July?
June, marginally. They are close, but June averages 41.4°C against July’s 42.5°C, June nights are nearly three degrees cooler, and June has no rain at all. July’s advantage is that the humidity gap between the coast and the desert is at its widest, which makes the trip out feel more worthwhile.
