The phrase “night safari” covers two very different trips, and operators are rarely in a hurry to say which one they are selling you.
One is the standard evening safari, which reaches the camp at dusk, runs through dinner and the shows in the dark, and has you back at your hotel by half past nine. The other is the desert at actual night — after the vehicles leave, when the lights go down and the sky does what desert sky does. This page separates them honestly.
The evening trip: dark, but not night
The standard evening safari is genuinely a dark-hours trip: you watch the sun go down from the dunes, and everything at the camp — dinner, the tanoura, the fire show — happens under lanterns and string lights.
It is the right trip for most people, and everything about it is on the evening safari page: from AED 35 self-drive, AED 50 by coach, AED 100 with hotel pickup, the same eighteen inclusions on each.
But be clear about what it is: a camp at full occupancy, lit for a hundred guests, ending around nine. Atmospheric, yes. Night, in the sense the word suggests when you imagine a desert — no.
The overnight: when the desert actually turns off
Around nine the evening groups head back to the city, and inside half an hour the camp becomes a different place. This is what the overnight package at AED 450 per person exists for.
The string lights go down, the generator settles, and the loudest thing left is the fire. You sleep in a Bedouin-style tent and wake for sunrise over untouched dunes — the single best light of the entire twenty-four hours, with almost nobody awake to see it.

One honest note: dune bashing happens in daylight and at sunset, never in the dark. No responsible driver reads dunes by headlight. The night is for the camp, the fire and the sky.
What you will and will not see
From inside the camp, expect the bright objects: the moon doing its considerable thing, the planets, the major constellations. The lanterns and the fire cost you the faint stuff — light is light.
Walk two hundred metres past the edge of the lights and the sky improves dramatically. Most guests never do this. It is the best free upgrade at the camp.
The serious version is the overnight on a moonless winter night, after the camp goes dark — that is when Al Khatim shows you a sky no city within an hour of you can. Check the moon phase before you pick the date; a full moon is beautiful and terrible for stars in equal measure.

The desert does not hold its heat
Sand radiates heat away the moment the sun leaves, and there is no cloud, no sea and no concrete out there to slow it down. A pleasant 24-degree winter afternoon becomes single figures at the camp by late evening — and colder again before dawn on an overnight.
Evening guests: bring a proper jacket, not a token layer, November through February. Closed shoes always.
