The 28 August Long Weekend in Abu Dhabi: What the Desert Is Actually Like
Three days off, and then school on Monday. Here is what happens at the camp on each of those three nights, which one we would put you on, and the one plan we would talk you out of.

The UAE Cabinet has moved this year’s Prophet’s Birthday holiday to Friday 28 August. Public sector, private sector, everybody. With Saturday and Sunday sitting behind it, that is three full days off.
Then schools reopen on Monday 31 August. So this is not just a long weekend — it is the last long weekend of the summer holidays, and the desert knows it. Here is what each of those three nights actually looks like at the camp, and which one we would put you on.
The short version
Friday 28 is the busy one. Everyone with three days off starts on day one. The camp is at its fullest, the shared bus fills before anything else, and the atmosphere is the best it gets all month. If you want the fire, the drums and the dance floor to feel like an event rather than a demonstration, this is your night.
Saturday 29 is the comfortable one. Same trip, same price, noticeably more room on the carpets. Most people who ask us “which day should we come” end up here.
Sunday 30 is the quiet one, and the risky one. Lovely and empty. But you are back in the city around half past nine, and somebody in your house starts a new school year ten hours later.

Why 28 August is a holiday at all
The occasion is Mawlid an-Nabi, the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, which falls on 12 Rabi Al Awwal in the Hijri calendar. That date lands mid-week this year. Under a 2025 law the Cabinet can shift a public holiday to a Friday or a Monday to create a longer continuous break, and that is exactly what it did — the day off moved to Friday 28 August for both the public and private sectors.

That last row is the one people forget when they are booking, and it changes the answer for families. More on that further down.
What three days off actually does to the desert
Nothing about the desert changes. What changes is how many people are in it.
The shared bus is the first thing to go. It runs from three fixed points — Al Wahda, Mazyad and Safeer — with a set number of seats, so on a holiday evening it is simply full earlier in the week than usual. The sharing Land Cruiser with hotel pickup goes next, because the routing has to work: six or seven pickups across the city all have to land at the dunes before the light goes.
Private cars and self-drive are the two that stay flexible, for opposite reasons. A private car is yours, so nobody else’s timing affects it. Self-drive has no vehicle to allocate at all — you point your own car at the camp and arrive when you arrive.
One practical effect: on a busy evening we start the pickup window at its earlier end rather than its later end. If you are told 3:00 PM on the 28th, that is not padding.
The heat is still August. The light is not.
Do not expect the weekend to feel like autumn. Late August in Abu Dhabi still runs to about 40°C in the afternoon, the overnight low in the city sits in the low thirties, and the Gulf is around 34°C, which is why the coast stays sticky long after dark. Out at Al Khatim, roughly 85 km inland, the humidity is a different story — that is the part first-timers never expect. We wrote the full explanation in the August heat guide.
The light, though, has already started to move. Sunset on 1 August was just after 7 PM. By the long weekend it looks like this.

In practice that gives you a little over two hours of daylight after you reach the sand. Dune bashing and photographs happen in it, the sand starts handing its heat back to the sky while dinner is being served, and the drive home is in full dark. If you want the sky properly black for the stars, you want to still be at the camp at nine.
Which of the three days to book
Friday 28 — atmosphere. A full camp is a different experience from a half-empty one. The tanoura spins to a crowd, the fire pit has people around it, and the buffet queue feels like a party rather than a canteen. The trade is space, and the fact that you have to decide early.
Saturday 29 — the balance. Still lively, but you can find a quiet carpet when you want one. Nothing about the trip or the price is different from Friday.
Sunday 30 — space. The dunes look empty in your photographs, the camel queue is short, and you are not waiting for a quad bike. Read the next section before you pick it.
If your priority is photographs with nobody else in them, book Sunday and ask for the early end of the pickup window. If your priority is atmosphere, book Friday and book it this week.
The Monday problem, said out loud
Schools across the UAE reopen on Monday 31 August for the 2026–27 year. An evening safari on Sunday the 30th puts you back at your door somewhere around half past nine, later if you are the last drop-off on the route. Add showers and the sand that gets everywhere, and a child who is starting a new school year is going to bed close to eleven.
The overnight safari on Sunday night is a straight no for a school family. You sleep at the camp, watch the sunrise and get back to the city mid-morning. That is a wonderful trip on the wrong night.
We would rather lose the booking than have a nine-year-old asleep in their first lesson of the year. For families, take Friday or Saturday. The family safari page has the age notes and what to bring for children.
What to book, and when to book it
The trip at the camp is identical in every case. The only real decision is how you get to the dunes, and that is what the price difference is.

There is no deposit and no card details. You pay at the camp, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
If you leave it to Thursday night
It happens every holiday, and it is usually fine. What is realistically still open late in the week is self-drive and private car. Neither depends on a shared seat, so neither runs out in the same way.
The shared bus is the one that genuinely closes. If you message us on Thursday evening for four seats on the Friday bus, there is a real chance the honest answer is no — and you will get the honest answer rather than a booking we cannot seat.

Three plans we would talk you out of
Not because they are bad ideas in general. Because they are bad ideas on these three specific days.
- Quad bikes or buggies at midday. An open engine, a helmet and 40°C is not a holiday memory. Ride them at the camp in the evening instead, when the track has cooled and the sun is low.
- An overnight safari on Sunday 30 for anyone with school on Monday. Book it for the Friday night, or wait for a weekend in October when it is genuinely cool.
- Turning up on Friday expecting a quiet camp. If quiet is what you are after, Friday 28 is the wrong night of the three, and no amount of booking early will change that.

Is 28 August 2026 a public holiday in the UAE?
Yes. Friday 28 August 2026 is a paid public holiday for the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, in both the public and private sectors. The Islamic date falls mid-week, and the Cabinet moved the day off to the Friday so it joins the weekend.
Is a desert safari more expensive on the long weekend?
No. Our prices on 28, 29 and 30 August are the same as any other day: AED 40 if you drive yourself to the camp, AED 60 on the sharing bus, AED 150 in a sharing Land Cruiser with hotel pickup, or AED 700 for a private car holding up to six. No holiday surcharge, and no deposit.
Which day of the long weekend is busiest?
Friday 28 August. Almost everyone starts a three-day break on the first day, so the camp is fullest that night and the shared bus fills earliest. Saturday is the balanced choice and Sunday is the quietest.
Can we still book on the day?
Usually yes for self-drive and for a private car, because neither depends on a shared seat. The sharing bus from Al Wahda, Mazyad or Safeer is the one that closes, sometimes days ahead on a holiday.
Is it too hot for children on 28–30 August?
Not for the evening trip. You reach the dunes late in the afternoon, sunset is around 6:45 PM and the camp cools down noticeably once the sand stops holding the day’s heat. Midday quad bikes and long camel treks are a different matter — those we would move to the evening or to a cooler month.
When do schools reopen after this weekend?
Monday 31 August 2026, the start of the 2026–27 academic year. That is worth remembering before you book the Sunday night, and it rules out the overnight safari for school families.
