The Desert Safari Packing List: Six Things, Not Sixty
The evening safari needs less than any packing article admits — six items, one bag, done. Here is the honest list, the seasonal swaps, and the short list of what to deliberately leave behind.

Packing articles pad themselves to thirty items because six looks too short to publish. We publish six, because the camp already provides food, drink, entertainment, blankets for the chill and photographs — and because overpacked guests spend the dunes minding a bag.
The list, the swaps, and the leave-behinds — two minutes and you are packed.
Everything the evening actually needs
1. Closed shoes. Trainers. Sand defeats sandals in the first minute and the camp is 30% walking.
2. A warm layer (October–March). Fleece or light jacket — single-figure nights are the season’s one ambush.
3. Sunglasses and 4. sunscreen — the pre-sunset hour is low, gold and stronger than it looks.
5. A charged phone. Camera, torch and booking in one; signal is patchy at the camp so it works hardest as a camera.
6. Cash, AED 100–200. Tips are voluntary and card works for the balance — but there is no ATM in the desert and the tipping page explains the gesture.
That is the list. Everything else on this page is refinement.
Same bag, different month
November–February: upgrade the layer to a real jacket and add a scarf — it doubles for wind on the dune crest and modesty if the mosque shares the day.
March–May, September–October: the six-item list exactly as written.
June–August: drop the layer, double the water for the drive, and read the summer page before anything else. Loose long sleeves beat vests in real heat.

Morning bag, overnight bag
Morning safari: swap the jacket for a cap; the enemy is glare, not cold. Sunscreen stops being optional entirely.
Overnight (AED 450): add a sleeping layer, toothbrush, power bank and a winter beanie — the camp provides bedding, dinner and breakfast, and the overnight page covers the night itself.
With small children: their usual kit plus wipes, a change of clothes, and the car-seat conversation with us in advance — the family page handles ages properly.
The anti-list
Alcohol — not permitted at the camp in any form; the alcohol page explains the licensing reality.
Drones — tightly regulated in the UAE and not flyable at the camp without permits nobody issues for a tourist evening. Phone footage from the dune crest wins anyway.
Big luggage — hotel or storage; small daypacks ride happily.
Heels, flip-flops, and anything precious that hates sand. The desert returns nothing it is given. Six items in, memories out — that is the trade.
Packing — your questions
What should I bring on a desert safari?
Closed shoes, a warm layer (October-March), sunglasses, sunscreen, your phone charged, and AED 100-200 in cash if you want to tip or take extras. That is genuinely the whole list for the evening safari.
What should I NOT bring?
Alcohol (not permitted at the camp), big luggage (stays at the hotel or see luggage storage), heels or flip-flops, and anything you would cry about losing in sand. Drones need permits in the UAE – leave them home.
Do I need to bring water or food?
No – water, soft drinks, coffee and tea are unlimited at the camp and the buffet is included. Bring a bottle for the drive if you like; the desert answers the rest.
What about for the morning safari?
Swap the warm layer for more sun protection: cap, sunglasses, sunscreen. The desert before noon is bright rather than hot in winter and simply bright and hot in summer.
What extra goes in the overnight bag?
A proper warm layer for sleeping, a toothbrush, a power bank, and the beanie you will pretend you did not need. The camp covers bedding, dinner and breakfast.
Is there anywhere to charge phones or change clothes?
Treat the camp as having neither and pack accordingly – charged phone, dressed for the evening from pickup. The toilet facilities page covers what the camp does have.
