The honest bit
Thirty minutes of driving inside a four-hour evening
Buggy listings across this market are sold as four, five or six-hour tours. The driving is thirty minutes to an hour of that. Here is where the rest of the time goes, so nobody is surprised.

Is thirty minutes enough?
For most people, honestly, yes. A buggy on soft sand is physical and loud and you concentrate the whole time. Guests who ask for an hour usually spend the last ten minutes going gently. If you genuinely want longer, say so when you book and we will price it — but do not buy an hour just because it sounds better value.

Why a buggy is AED 800 when a quad is AED 100
It is a fair question and most operators dodge it. You will also find pages advertising a buggy at AED 300, which is worth being suspicious of. Here is the actual arithmetic.
- The machine costs moreA sport buggy is worth many times what a tourist quad is worth. That capital has to come back out of a much smaller number of sessions per day.
- Two seats, one priceAED 800 is for the buggy, not per person. Two of you go out for AED 400 each — which puts it in a different light against a quad at AED 100 a head.
- It drinks fuelA buggy working through soft sand uses several times what a quad uses over the same half hour.
- Sand destroys drivetrainsDrive belts, air filters and shock seals are consumables out here, not annual items. A machine that is run hard needs work after not very many hours.
- You cannot run twenty of themQuads go out in big groups with one guide. Buggies do not — they need space, and a guide leading a small convoy.

If price is the deciding factor, take the quad
We would rather tell you that than have you feel short-changed. A single-seater quad is AED 100 for thirty minutes and it is genuinely good fun. The buggy is not a better quad — it is a different thing, and the reason to pay for it is the cage, the second seat and the speed, not the badge. Quad prices are here.
Quad or buggy
The real difference is what happens if it goes wrong
On a quad you sit on top of the machine and steer with handlebars, and you lean it through turns with your body. There is no cage and nothing holding you on. On soft sand, an inexperienced rider who panics on the throttle can put a quad over — and there is nothing between them and the ground.
A buggy is a seat, a steering wheel, pedals, a roll cage over your head and a harness across your chest. If it goes onto its side you are held in place. That is the entire reason it exists as a tourist product and it is why we put nervous drivers, older guests and anyone riding with a child into one.
The trade-off is money and intimacy. A quad puts you in the wind with sand hitting your arms. A buggy is faster, safer and more comfortable, and slightly further removed from the desert.

Who drives
Driver and passenger — who can do what
Almost no operator separates these two, which is why families cannot work out whether their teenager can come. Ours is simple.

You do not need a driving licence
This is desert ground, not a public road, and you are driving in convoy behind a guide. If you have never held a licence in your life you can still drive the buggy. Public roads are a different matter entirely — a buggy is not road legal anywhere in the UAE.
Both of you can drive
If you are two adults, tell the guide and you can swap at the halfway point. It costs nothing extra and it is the obvious thing to do with one buggy between two people.
Who should not go
Pregnant guests, and anyone with back, neck or heart trouble. A buggy over dune ridges is a rougher ride than the Land Cruiser. Everything else at the camp is still open to you.
Which machine is out
The buggies at the camp change over time as machines are serviced and replaced. If the exact model matters to you, ask on WhatsApp before you book and we will tell you what is actually on the ground for your date rather than quote a spec sheet at you.
Where and when
Al Khatim, early or late — never the middle of the day
The buggy runs from our camp in the Al Khatim desert, out along the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain road, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the city depending on where you are staying. Rolling sand, no rocks, and enough space that you are not driving through someone else’s dust.
- Sunrise, October to AprilFirm sand, cool air, best grip and the least dust in the air. If you have never driven one, take this slot.
- The 90 minutes before sunsetSofter sand, more work, better photographs, and it puts you at the camp for the BBQ. Most guests take this.
- May to SeptemberMorning only, and shorter. The sand surface passes 60°C and a buggy cabin in the open sun is not a pleasant place to concentrate.
- Where exactlyWe send you the pickup time the day before, and if you are driving yourself we send GPS coordinates and the last stretch of road in plain words. No vague “45 minutes from your hotel” nonsense.
Practical
What to wear and what is provided
Helmet, goggles, harness
All included, all compulsory. The buggy comes with a factory roll cage and belts — you will be shown how they fasten and someone checks them before you move.
Closed shoes and long trousers
You are working pedals, so trainers rather than sandals. Long trousers because sand comes in over the sides and it is abrasive at speed.
Something over your face
A buff or a light scarf tucked in. Not a loose one hanging out — nothing that can catch on anything should be on you in a moving machine.
Loose items and good sunglasses
Anything in an open pocket ends up in the sand. Goggles go over glasses, and fine sand scratches good lenses.

How much is a dune buggy in Abu Dhabi?

Why do I see buggies advertised at AED 300?
You will. We cannot run one at that price with a private transfer out to Al Khatim and keep the machine properly maintained, so we do not pretend we can.
Do I drive it myself?
Yes. A guide leads the route and you follow in convoy in your own buggy. Nobody drives it for you.
Do I need a driving licence?
No. This is desert ground rather than a public road. If you have never held a licence you can still drive the buggy. Buggies are not road legal anywhere in the UAE at any age.
What is the minimum age?
Sixteen to drive, with a parent’s consent if you are under eighteen. Eight to ride as a passenger with an adult driving.
Can two people share one buggy?
That is exactly what it is for. Two seats side by side, one price, and you can swap driver at the halfway point at no extra cost.
Is a buggy safer than a quad?
Structurally, yes. You are inside a roll cage with a harness across you, rather than sitting on top of a machine with nothing holding you on. That is the main reason people choose it.
How fast does it go?
Faster than you will want to go in your first five minutes. The guide sets the pace and it is not a race — on soft sand, smooth is quick and rushing just buries you.
Is thirty minutes enough?
For most people, yes. It is more physical and more concentrated than it looks. If you want longer, tell us when you book and we will price it properly.
Can I do it if I am pregnant?
We advise against it, along with the dune bashing. The camp, the camel ride, the food and the shows are all still yours.
What should I wear?
Closed shoes, long trousers, and something over your face. Leave loose scarves and good sunglasses behind.
Where does it run?
From our camp in the Al Khatim desert, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Abu Dhabi city on the Al Ain road. We send you the exact pickup time the day before, and coordinates if you are driving yourself.
Can I do it in summer?
Mornings only from May to September, and shorter sessions. The sand surface gets past 60°C and an open cabin in that heat is genuinely unpleasant.
Do I pay a deposit?
No. Nothing is charged on this website and we do not ask for money in advance. You pay at the camp on the day, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before pickup.
Can I add it to a safari?
Yes, to any package on this site. The evening safari plus a buggy is the usual combination.
