Most private-versus-shared pages are upsell pages wearing a comparison costume. This one starts from the number that settles half the cases outright.
A seat in a shared 4×4 with hotel pickup is AED 100. The whole private car is AED 599. At six people, private is cheaper. At five, it costs one dirham less than a dinner to remove every compromise on this page. The interesting question is what happens below that line.
The camp does not know how you arrived
Before the differences, the large identical part: the evening itself. Dune bashing, the sunset stop, camels, sandboarding, the falcon, the costume photos, henna, the full BBQ buffet and the shows — all eighteen inclusions are the same on both, from the same camp at Al Khatim.
Private does not buy a better dinner, a closer fire or a longer camel. Anyone selling “exclusive camp access” at these prices is selling words — the camp is shared every night, for everyone. What private buys is the journey: the vehicle, the clock and the company.
Seating at the camp is the one exception, and it is open to both: the VIP majlis bay at +AED 50 a head reserves the front row whichever way you travelled.
A fixed clock and an empty back seat
No pickup circuit. A shared 4×4 collects several parties across the city; yours is the only address on a private run. That is 20–40 minutes saved each way and a departure at a time, not in a window.
Your pace. Linger at the sunset stop while the shared cars move on. Leave the camp after dinner instead of after the last show. Ask the driver to go gentler — or skip dune bashing entirely — without negotiating with strangers.
Your company. Small children, a grandmother, a proposal you are hiding in your jacket pocket: some evenings simply go better without four unknown co-passengers, and that is worth naming as the real product.

Is a private desert safari worth it?
At five or six people it is not even a question of worth – the AED 599 car costs less than six shared seats at AED 100. Below that, you are paying for a fixed departure time, no pickup circuit, and choosing your own pace. For two people on a budget, shared is the honest recommendation.
What is the difference at the camp?
Nothing. The camp, buffet, shows and all eighteen inclusions are identical – the camp does not know how you arrived. Private buys the journey and the clock, not a different evening.
How many people fit in a shared 4×4?
Up to six guests plus the driver. Couples and solo travellers share with others; a group of five or six should take the whole car – it is cheaper anyway. The seats-per-car page does the arithmetic.
Does private mean a private camp?
No, and nobody at these prices offers one. The camp is shared every night. Private means the vehicle. If you want the desert without a crowd, the overnight and sunrise trips are the honest routes.
Can a private car change the itinerary?
